It’s back to school time again! This will be the second year the Prince George’s County public schools are starting school after Labor Day making the first day Tuesday, September 4th.  Are you and your family ready? It’s been so much fun at Parkside this summer watching new houses being built, neighbors moving in, and most of all, kids playing outside. Now it’s time to put up the bike and head to the bus!

While new clothes and new school supplies are important, make sure to find out about your child’s new bus, or bus number. Calling your child’s school is a great way to find out this information if you haven’t received information in the mail. At Parkside, most PGCPS school busses pick up and drop off on the corner of Central Park Drive and Manor Oak View Drive East. So between 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., drivers should be aware that this will be a busier time for kids on foot in the neighborhood. There are also several school busses that pick up before and after these times as well.

Drivers should also be aware of the “school bus rules”. For Maryland, the rules are as follows:

If a school vehicle has stopped on a roadway and is operating the alternately flashing red lights, the driver of any vehicle following or approaching the school vehicle shall: stop at least 20 feet from the rear of the school vehicle, if approaching the school vehicle from its rear; or at least 20 feet from the front of the school vehicle, if approaching the school vehicle from its front. The driver of any vehicle following or approaching the school vehicle may not proceed until the school vehicle resumes motion or the alternately flashing red lights are deactivated. This does not apply to the driver of a vehicle on a physically divided highway.  ~ State Laws

There are usually many parents at this bus stop as well, many on foot and some waiting in cars along Central Park Drive which makes it a safer place for your child, no matter the age or grade, to catch the bus. It’s also a good spot to meet other parents in the neighborhood! Remember that children under seven years old must be accompanied by an adult at the bus stop.
